Welcome to James Island Arts!

Our Mission

James Island Arts seeks to enhance the quality of life on James Island by promoting awareness of Western Islands artists and their work, and supporting art education and cultural events on the Island.

Our Projects

Our annual Fine Art Auction draws attention to the wealth of Island talent, cultivates a local buyership for fine art, gives a public performance venue to our young musicians, and raises money for Island art classrooms.

Poetry at McLeod is a collaborative project with McLeod Plantation Historic Site and Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission presenting African American poetry at a site where Islanders' ancestors were enslaved.

Future projects being discussed include ongoing cultural events at James Island Town Hall; community projects such as an outdoor earthen oven, and an oral history quilt; and the eventual creation of a cultural center. We are applying for grants and working on 501(c)3 status for fundraising purposes.

Our Supporters

James Island merchants generously support our efforts through cash and in-kind contributions, and we urge our community to choose to do businesses with them first.

Grantors to James Island Arts include James Island Pride, Publix Markets, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, the Charleston COunty Parks and Recreation Commission, the Poetry Society of South Carolina, and the National Endowment for the Arts and the SC Arts Commission through South Arts.

Documents, reviews, and articles covering James Island Arts events and Island artists will be made available on this website.

Our Artists

James Island is home to professional artists working in all genres of the performing and plastic arts. From spoken word performance to musical theatre, from fiber art to earthworks, locally and abroad, our artists strive to produce work of the highest quality.
