Welcome to James Island Arts!

Our Mission

James Island Arts Council (JI Arts) seeks to promote art forms that transcend boundaries, foster dialogue, and enhance the cultural experience of all James Islanders for a more vibrant and cohesive James Island. By promoting local and collaborating global artists, art education and cultural events on the Sea Islands, JI Arts resolves to improve the quality of life for all residents and visitors of Charleston County’s Coastal Communities.

Our Goals

  • Celebrate our historic and continually evolving Island cultures

  • Highlight historical achievements and artistic expressions of partnering global cultures while developing an appreciation for the arts

  • Support art education and community outreach

  • Develop culture and tourism, as well as enhance economic development by expanding the region’s reputation as an arts center and a destination for cultural events

  • Foster a spirit of collaboration among local schools, churches, civic and senior organizations to showcase the talents and interests of their diverse membership, to advance the arts in our communities.

Our Projects

Our annual Fine Art Auction draws attention to the wealth of Island talent, cultivates a local buyership for fine art, a public performance venue for our fledgling and seasoned musicians, and raises money for the arts to thrive in our Island schools.

Future projects include ongoing cultural events at the beautiful new James Island Town Hall, an innovative storytelling series set to roots music and dance, partnerships with local schools, churches, civic and senior organizations, promotion of culturally-aware local and commercial businesses and their positive influence on community art development, mentoring of the Island’s young and emerging artists by professional artists, and the creation of an Island Cultural Center. We are applying for grants and have achieved 501(c)3 status for fundraising purposes. It is our goal to secure and manage sufficient resources to advance the arts in our communities for all to enjoy.

Besides recently being voted World’s "best", "friendliest" and "prettiest" in 2017, Travel & Leisure Magazine ranked the Charleston area the No. 1 City in the U.S. and Canada for the 5th consecutive year, exceeding other destinations in the categories of sights/landmarks, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people/friendliness, shopping and value. Yelp ranks Charleston #1 City in U.S. and Canada for economic opportunity and National Geographic recognized Charleston as a top U.S. Community with the most green space. Our Sea Islands and artistic communities contribute to a growing part of that national ranking.

Our Supporters

James Island merchants generously support our efforts through cash and in-kind contributions, and we urge our community to choose our supporters first, for their business needs.

Grantors to James Island Arts include James Island Pride, Publix Markets, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, the Poetry Society of South Carolina, and the National Endowment for the Arts and the SC Arts Commission through South Arts.
